Description

Proposed Dates: 16th July 2021 – 25th July 2021
(Workshop commences and concludes in Queenstown, NZ)

Join me and Douglas Thorne on the ultimate New Zealand Winter Wonderland Adventure. Rolling green hills, majestic mountains, breathtaking Fiords, New Zealand is one of the most picturesque and photogenic places on Earth.

Personally I have travelled to New Zealand multiple times and visited most of the South Island’s best locations. I have intimate knowledge of the roads, the locations and the best compositions whether it is sunrise, sunset or even astrophotography. My work has won competitions and prizes and even been used in marketing and feature articles by the likes of Lonely Planet and Adobe.

Douglas Thorne is a New Zealander who grew up in Te Anau, Fiordland. He is a local seasonal nature guide in the area. Douglas has been photographing for 15 years and loves shooting wildlife, nature and weddings. Going on adventures with camera in hand is his passion. Douglas also has a first aid certificate and has driven for many international photography tours including Sony.

Between us we will expertly guide you through New Zealand’s South Island capturing some of the most stunning scenery you’ll ever witness. This photography tour is limited to 8 participants, it is advisable to register your interest early.

While the ultimate itinerary will be decided on closer to the date (and we’ll need a level of flexibility to change plans and chase the right conditions) pending weather, tide conditions, sunrise/sunset times, moon visibility and hotel availability etc. And if we’re lucky enough we might even have the opportunity to capture the elusive Aurora Australis aka The Southern Lights.

Here are some of the places you may have the ability to photograph:

  • Mt Cook National Park (Hooker Lake and Tasman Lake)
  • Milford Sound
  • Wanaka
  • Lake Tekapo
  • The Various Waterfalls in the Catlins
  • Nugget Point
  • Moeraki Boulders
  • Moke Lake
  • Glenorchy
  • Queenstown
  • Twizel

There is also optional flight experiences where we’ve negotiated special pricing that will make it a unique experience in comparison to other photography tours. Please enquire for more information.

What you’ll learn:
  • Master your camera in manual mode (Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO)
  • Master the art of balancing elements, leading lines, viewpoint, depth of field and focus stacking
  • How to read your histogram and use filters to control highlights and have a balanced exposure
  • Learn about composition and design elements in your imagery
  • Learn to use your editing software (Such as Lightroom and Photoshop or CaptureOne)

Fitness Level:
Easy to Moderate. Most of the walks/hikes are relatively short with small changes in elevation. Sometimes the sites are right next to the car park. However places like Mt Cook have multiple hiking options with the longest our group will complete will be the Hooker Lake. For the most part this hike is quite easy but there are a number of elevation changes and some stairs involved. For those who are unable to complete this we may stop half way or 2/3rd of the way and find another composition while the remainder of the group can continue to the lake. There is no shortage of compositions here!

What to bring (recommended):
  • DSLR/Mirrorless Camera
